ITI-HOCOS is happy to welcome Afonso Azenha as a new group member. Afonso studied Engineering Physics at the University of Lisbón, where he worked on, among others, variational quantum algorithms and photon-based quantum communication. In Stuttgart, he will be working on the newly approved research project “Quantum Computing Engineering for Multi-QPU Architectures” funded within the IQST Graduate School @QuantumBW. The project, which involves IBM Quantum as the industrial partner, will consider modular architectures for quantum computers with a large number of qubits. Their quantum processing units (QPUs) are integrated into multi-QPU modules, which again are connected with each other by a mixture of classical and quantum couplers acting over short, medium and long range. The scientific goal of the project is to develop quantum computing engineering methods, which will connect the domains of quantum algorithms and quantum hardware, encompassing tasks such as transpilation, error mitigation, and allocation of ancilla qubits to QPUs.
