VHDL Compact Course

Druckansicht

VHDL is a hardware descrition language suitable for describing digital circuits at the algorithmic, register transfer, and gate levels. It enables event-driven simulation and provides concepts for describing circuit hierarchy, concurrency, and time in addition to features known from programming languages. The course teaches the most important language constructs and their proper usage for hardware description. Short lectures of 30-60 minutes are immediately followed by exercise sections of 45-90 minutes in which the new knowledge is applied.

The following topics are addressed:

  • Design hierarchy: entities, architectures, their instantiation and connection
  • Source code files and their compilation into design libraries
  • Concurrent sequential processes
  • Sequential statements
  • Type system
  • Description of typical hardware structures
  • VHDL for hardware synthesis
  • Description of regular structures
  • Simulation mechanisms
  • Testbenches and text files
  • Organization of VHDL based projects

Notice:

Course is voluntary and addresses students of Informatik who wish to focus on Technische Informatik during their studies. Course is also voluntary and targeted at INFOTECH students who wish to focus on embedded systems / digital design but had no exposure to hardware description languages during their B.Sc. studies. Attendance capacity is limited, admission on a first come first serve basis.

Required Qualifications:

Experience in a programming language (Ada, C++, Java, etc.). Attendance of RO/TI2 or other course on digital circuits and computer organization.

Literature

  • Peter J. Ashenden: The Designer's Guide to VHDL (2nd edition) Morgan Kaufman / Elsevier (2002)
  • Peter J. Ashenden: The Student's Guide to VHDL Morgan Kaufman / Elsevier (1998)

Lecture Dates:

The compact course will take place from 7th - 11th September, 2009.

Registration:

You can still register for the course by sending an e-mail to sabine.keller@informatik.uni-stuttgart.de
Registration deadline will be Friday, July 24, 2009.

Further important information for INFOTECH Students:

INFOTECH students who like the course mentioned in their academic transcript will have to register for the exam during the exam registration week at the INFOTECH-Office.
